It’s not easy to get four people, particularly four artists to agree on anything. And yet, the Pacifica Quartet appears to have no problem managing to make their separate presences heard in the music they play together.
In the case of the Pacifica Quartet, camaraderie and communication are broadened by the musicians’ diverse cultural roots: a Japanese-Norwegian violist; a Pakistani-American violinist; a violinist from Iceland; and a Hungarian-Russian cellist. Their backgrounds may be diverse but the music they produce highlights their cohesiveness and closeness. They’ve been together a long time, and known each other even longer — since they were teenagers. “All of us knew that this was the type of music and music-making we wanted to do,” says violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson. You can sense their long-term ties and their ongoing affection in the way they play together— particularly in a live performance, when you can watch their glances and smiles. It is an astonishing thing to behold, and audiences always respond warmly to it.
Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and often-daring repertory choices, over the past two decades the Grammy Award winning Pacifica Quartet has gained international stature as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today.
The Pacifica Quartet returns to San Francisco with a program that combines the classic and the contemporary. Like all great musicians, they’re always excited about upcoming performances. But there’s an undercurrent of additional excitement when they speak about their upcoming appearance as part of the San Francisco Performances series. Not only are they returning to the West Coast, where they got their start, but while in San Francisco they have a chance to perform a mix of old and new: Mozart and Mendelssohn and an unreservedly modern piece. Each retaining its own character while at the same time becoming completely their own version. Or are we talking about the musicians themselves: each maintaining their own character while creating one unifying sound.
